Precast Modular Retaining Walls
A precast counterfort retaining wall system is a variation of a typical cantilever stem wall. Precast facing units are secured to a cast-in-place or precast footing. Rather than designing the entire length of the facing stem to resist the lateral earth pressure load, the facing units are each cast with one or two counterforts on the rear side. The counterforts work as cantilever beams to resist lateral earth pressure, allowing for a relatively thin wall facing between them. Counterforts also reduce the moment in the footing, allowing for a more efficient and economical footing design. The counterforts, facing, and footing are custom designed for the wall, greatly increasing the material efficiency of the cantilever system.
Benefits:
- Economical replacement to conventional cast-in-place cantilever designs.
- Less cast-in-place work compared to a conventional cantilever wall.
- Ideal for narrow cut applications, or extreme utility obstruction scenarios.
- Quality, speed of erection, and architectural versatility of precast concrete units.
