The SH-21 Cervidae Peak Wildlife Overpass project was completed in late 2023, incorporating the use of Reinforced Earth® retaining walls to support the overpass structure. About 10,000 square feet of panel facing with a painted stone finish blends seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
In this project, the retaining walls play a crucial role in creating a smooth transition between the wildlife overpass and the adjacent terrain. They enable the overpass to accommodate the varying elevation changes of the landscape, minimizing the need for extensive excavation or embankments. This helped maintain the ecological integrity of the area by reducing soil disturbance and preserving the natural habitat.
Overall, the walls provide structural stability while supporting the project’s primary objective of facilitating safe wildlife passage across SH-21, mitigating vehicle-wildlife collisions, and promoting biodiversity connectivity.
